TOWN HALL (STAIDHUIS)

The Town Hall was rebuilt in 1962 onto the east end of the Cloth Hall. The council chambers can be visited (when not in use) on working days between 08.30 and 11.45.

ST MARTINS CATHEDRAL

Also reconstructed after W.W.1. Majestic building in the Gothic style containing the tomb of Bishop Jansenius. Over the south door there is a large rose window. In the nave you will find the pulpit made of marble and heavily decorated, also on the north wall are the paintings of the 14 stations of the cross.

ST GEORGES MEMORIAL CHURCH (ANGLICAN)

Built in 1929 in remembrance of the soldiers who died in the Ypres Salient. The church is a copy of an English parish church, designed by Reginald Bloomfield (who also designed the Menin Gate and contributed to the design of the electric pylons) and contains many memorials. Open every day. From St Martins Cathedral its just along Vandenpeereboombplein and around the corner into Elverdingsestraat.

ST NICHOLAS CHURCH

A new church built on the site of one destroyed in W.W.1. Closed as a church in 1994 and now houses the Municipal School Museum, it shows local education from 1253 to the present day and includes pictures, photographs and reconstructed classrooms. Leave Grote Markt along Boterstraat, the church is on the right. Open Apr-Oct 10.00 to 12.30 and 14.00 to 16.00. Nov-Mar 10.00 to 12.30 and 14.00t.17.00. Closed Mon.
